The Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) butterfly is a common visitor to grasslands and urban areas. The genus name “papilio” is Latin for butterfly and the species name “Polyxenes” is from King of Troy’s daughter, Polyxena from the Illiad. In the book she was sacrificed on Achilles tomb by his son, after her betryal leading to his death. Does this make the Black Swallowtail, the Butterfly of betrayel or of sacrifice?
